The college derives its name from Sister Nivedita (Margaret Elizabeth Noble), the illustrious disciple of Swami Vivekananda, who dedicated her life to the cause of education, social service, and the empowerment of women in India. Inspired by her ideals of selfless service, nation-building, and women's education, Bhagini Nivedita College seeks to nurture young women who can contribute meaningfully to society. Major Milestones (1993–2026)
Initial Academic Programmes
The college commenced its academic journey in 1993 with B.A. (Pass) and B.A. (Hons.) Hindi programmes. B.Com. (Pass) was introduced in 1996–97. In 1997, Bhagini Nivedita College became the first college of the University of Delhi to offer Apparel Design and Construction course in BA (Pass), reflecting its commitment to vocational and skill-oriented education.
Expansion of Academic Programmes
In 2004, B.A. (Pass) was replaced by the B.A. Programme, accompanied by the introduction of several application-oriented courses. The launch of B.Sc. (Applied Physical Sciences) in 2007 transformed the college into a multidisciplinary institution offering programmes in Arts, Commerce, and Science.
Introduction of the Semester System
The University of Delhi introduced the Semester System in 2010, which was adopted by the college across all programmes. The system facilitated continuous assessment, improved academic flexibility, and enhanced student engagement. The annual examination system was completely phased out by 2013.
Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP)
In 2013–14, the college adopted the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) in accordance with the University's academic reforms. Under this framework, the college offered Discipline-I courses in Commerce, Hindi, History, Home Science, Physics, and Political Science. However, following directions from the University Grants Commission (UGC), FYUP was withdrawn in 2014–15 and the associated academic structure was subsequently phased out.
Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)
The academic session 2015–16 marked the implementation of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). The framework introduced greater academic flexibility, interdisciplinary learning opportunities, and a credit-based approach to curriculum delivery and assessment.
Learning Outcomes-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF)
In 2019–20, the University of Delhi adopted the Learning Outcomes-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF), emphasizing outcome-based education, clearly defined learning outcomes, critical thinking, skill development, and competency-based learning.
National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and UGCF
Following the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the University of Delhi introduced the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022. The framework emphasizes multidisciplinary education, multiple entry and exit options, Academic Bank of Credits, skill enhancement, vocational education, experiential learning, research orientation, and holistic development. Bhagini Nivedita College successfully adopted the new framework and continues to align its academic practices with the transformative vision of NEP 2020.
