The Department of History established in 1993, at Bhagini Nivedita College believes that understanding the past helps us make sense of today. Our classrooms are spaces for debate, discovery, and deep reading. We combine time-tested methods of historical study with hands-on learning, so students graduate with strong analytical skills and a genuine curiosity about the world. Whether you want to teach, join the civil services, work in museums, explore archaeology, build a career in heritage tourism, or step into journalism and policy, we prepare you for it.

Learning Across Disciplines 

History does not exist in isolation. We regularly collaborate with the Departments of Political Science, Computer Science, and Sanskrit to offer interdisciplinary papers. Our faculty also contribute to joint courses with other departments, including combinations of History with Political Science, Computer Science, and Sanskrit. This helps students see how history connects with governance, technology, and classical knowledge.

Research and Beyond 

Our students do original research under faculty supervision. Recent work has covered local heritage sites, archival records, tourism practices, and ancient Indian traditions.

Outside the classroom, learning continues through:

• Field visits to monuments, museums, archives, and archaeological sites across Delhi and beyond, enabling students to engage directly with historical heritage and material culture.
• Career counselling and guidance related to History, Art History, Archaeology, Museology, Tourism, Research, and Civil Services, helping students explore diverse academic and professional pathways.
• Itihaas Baudh, the student-run History Society of the department, which organises talks, heritage walks, exhibitions, quizzes, and workshops on archives, museums, and heritage practices. Itihaas Baudh, meaning “historical consciousness,” serves as a platform where classroom learning connects with the lived and experiential understanding of history.
