The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a centrally sponsored public service programme initiated by the Government of India in 1969 under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The scheme aims to develop socially responsible and community-oriented youth by integrating meaningful social service with higher education.
The core philosophy of NSS is encapsulated in its motto, “Not Me, But You,” which emphasizes selfless service, empathy, and social commitment.
Objectives of NSS
● To inculcate a sense of social responsibility and civic consciousness among students
● To promote national integration through community service and outreach activities
● To develop leadership qualities, teamwork, and organizational skills
● To enable students to understand community needs and contribute to social development
● To foster personality development through voluntary service and experiential learning
Enrolment / Registration Process for Students
Enrolment in NSS is voluntary and open to students enrolled in recognized higher education institutions.
● Submission of an application form during the academic year
● Selection based on willingness to participate in regular activities and special camps
● Completion of formal registration with the NSS unit
● Orientation and briefing sessions conducted by the NSS Programme Officer
Once enrolled, volunteers are required to complete a minimum of 120 hours of regular activities per academic year and participate in at least one special residential camp to qualify for NSS certification.

● Community development programmes including village adoption and slum outreach
● Health and sanitation initiatives such as cleanliness drives and blood donation camps
● Environmental protection activities including tree plantation and water conservation drives
● National awareness campaigns on literacy, digital awareness, voter education, and road safety

● Special NSS residential camps focusing on intensive community service and leadership training
